See <a href=\"http:\/\/www.publiclibrariesonline.org\/magazines\/featured-articles\/e-book-experiment\">more details on the model<\/a> and a <a href=\"http:\/\/evoke.cvlsites.org\/resources-guides-and-more\/dear-publisher-partner\/\">letter to publishers<\/a> about how it works.<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s a cute way of reminding users of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.swissarmylibrarian.net\/2012\/05\/08\/highlighting-the-value-of-library-use\/\">value of libraries<\/a> when they check out print books.  It would be interesting to think of ways to make this work with e-resources&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Web design<\/strong><br \/>See a <a href=\"http:\/\/influx.us\/onepagerdemo\/\">demo of One-Pager<\/a>, a free template for library websites designed and user-tested to make it easy to find the most important information &#8211; and to be immediately mobile-friendly and accessible.  You can <a href=\"http:\/\/influx.us\/onepager\">read more or download the code here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Bibliographic software<\/strong><br \/><a href=\"http:\/\/m.friendfeed-media.com\/de185e8f702978f8fe28d91e574ee017eddc01da\">Beyond Bibliographies: Collaborating with Citation Software<\/a> (powerpoint) is a poster comparing Endnote, RefWorks, Zotero, and Mendeley.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Open Access<\/strong><br \/>(I try to include a variety of stuff in these round-ups, but open access is kind of a strong interest of mine, so&#8230;)<\/p>\n<p>Some keen-eyed librarians noticed that the previously open-access <em>Reference and User Services Quarterly<\/em> was suddenly open-access no longer; the Library Loon <a href=\"http:\/\/gavialib.com\/2012\/05\/rusqs-camouflage\/\">investigated<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/gavialib.com\/2012\/05\/update-on-rusq\/\">reported back<\/a>.  Apparently in future articles will be embargoed for a year, although as at writing older articles aren&#8217;t available yet either.<\/p>\n<p>(This reminds me that I keep meaning to find out whether <a href=\"http:\/\/lianza.org.nz\/resources\/lianza-publications\/nzlimj\">The New Zealand Library And Information Management Journal<\/a> is intended to be open access or if it&#8217;s just openly accessible by default, so to speak.  In any case they&#8217;re there at the moment &#8211; as are <a href=\"http:\/\/lianza.org.nz\/resources\/conference-proceedings\">all the LIANZA conference papers from 2004<\/a>.  They&#8217;re not browsable\/searchable in the most user-friendly format but I know from experience what the web group&#8217;s dealing with, and that just getting them all in one place is a fantastic achievement.)<\/p>\n<p>The Library Loon also has a fantastic discussion about how to recognise <a href=\"http:\/\/gavialib.com\/2012\/04\/assessing-the-scamminess-of-a-purported-open-access-publisher\/\">scammy &#8220;open access&#8221; publishers<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www8.open.ac.uk\/score\/news\/score-library-survey-report\">SCORE Library Survey Report<\/a> &#8220;aimed to get a national [UK] perspective on institutional engagement in Open Educational Resources through their librarians&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.slideshare.net\/ChemistryCentral\/open-access-in-chemistry-from-acs-spring-meeting-2011\">Open Access in Chemistry<\/a> &#8211; slides from a presentation at the 2011 ACS Spring Meeting giving an excellent overview of what it says on the tin &#8211; in terms both of numbers and of attitudes.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Lending eBooksColorado&#8217;s Douglas County Libraries has come up with a model whereby they buy, host, and manage the lending of ebooks (including DRM), rather than subscribe to publishers&#8217; platforms.
