Getting People Onside
Finding kindred spirits
Note: The following notes were written by a dozen people in four brainstorming sessions at the "Getting People Onside" workshop at LIANZA09 - I'm merely the scribe.
- Networking
- Join, create interest group
- Support from other colleagues
- similarities - learning - likeminded organisation
- inviting constructive criticism
- challenges - solving
- seek external (within organisation) opinion
- information technology - internet, twitter, blogs
- good customer
- networking as far afield as necessary
- networking outside library for people with common ground
- to find a kindred spirit - be a kindred spirit. Be who you want to find
- seek out people you admire
- finding people to talk to - inside and outside
- knowing what we are going through
- finding ways to connect and stay connected with others
- talking with people and making the connection
Kindred spirits might be in the most unlikely places.... for example, customers! Find out what passions people have - get to know, ask them questions. To find them you've got to ask "the questions" of them...
Feel okay to look outside your local network to connect with kindreds. Be proactive - don't wait for the kindred spirits to come to you. Be a kindred spirit. Seek out people you admire. It's also about attitudes, goals, motivations
- go to conferences
- local LIANZA events
- networks - eg young people's network
- set up your own group
- blogs / wikis
- finding kindred spirits among your customers
- talking
- mentors
- keeping it manageable - you don't have to use your entire network the entire time. Develop quality relationships as you need them.
- New staff identify problems more quickly, listen to their perceptions

- approach people who are passionate about it / common interest -> listen to others, make them feel
you trust them they can trust you [Deborah: I transcribed the struck out line because I think that's important too!]
- keep yourself informed what others are doing
